I was very impressed with Modoc NFS for a couple reasons.

1. The Ranger station in Altura was very informative and helpful in directing me to the obsidian mines for some rock hounding. The permit process was very quick, and the staff was very pleasant.

2. The two campgrounds (Plum Valley and Lassen Creek) I stayed at were clean and well maintained. There are no trash services however, so please pack your trash out.

3. I noticed that they were actively thinning the forests up in the Warner Mountains, removing not only dead trees, but a lot of the built up floor fuel and creating large composting heaps, very smart and proactive on their part. Shasta needs to take some notes from this crew.

Overall, it was a great week to be up in Modoc, and I salute whoever is making the decisions up there, keep up the good work.
