East Lake Commons is a delightful retreat of a neighborhood tucked away in the changing East Lake neighborhood of Decatur in Dekalb County. The place offers a five-acre farm from which you can participate in its seasonal CSA program. It also offers a large community garden what's you can plant on your own or participate in a group garden jovially regretted to as the communist plot! There is also an half acre blueberry patch as an apiary. The 67 townhouses that comprise the community are predominantly owner occupied, but also include rental units and several owners let room. This is a cohousing community and most decisions are made by the Board or via consensus of the community. There is a large playing field, shared toys, skate boards, bikes and scooters. Children as young as the cam be seem roaming barefoot throughout the gated community. They can also be seen hanging from fig trees or lounging in the tranquil gardens peppered throughout the property. The community actively engages in conscious living by composting and recycling and reducing their carbon got print. There are movies on the lawn, festival days, community forums, shared meals including Sunday dinners, classrooms for pottery, messy arts, yoga, dance and a variety of other activities. It was founded in part by Quakers and the overriding sense of the community is one of peacemaking. I've lived there and habe many friends in the community. I enjoy going back for visits often as I am able. It's a wonderful hideaway.
